May 12 to 18 is Reading is Fun week, an opportunity for parents and community members to spend quality time reading with children. Not just for one specific age group, this time is great to encourage all ages either to learn or improve their reading skills.

Reading is a key component in staying in school and acquiring a quality education.

To celebrate RIF week, try some of the following activities or visit Reading Is Fundamental’s website at www.rif.org to get some fun ideas on how to incorporate more reading into your child’s day.

• Read a nighttime story with different character voices. Have your child read their favorite character.
• Play word or letter bingo.
• Have your child write a story about their favorite superhero, favorite sport, anything that they are passionate about. If he or she likes art, he or she can draw a picture and write a story that goes along with it.
• Make up a scavenger hunt that uses written clues. You can even base it off of a book they have read.
• Get some letter and word magnets to play with on your refrigerator and leave notes for each other.
• Set a positive example—read in front of your kids.
