Charley, the father of three sons, didn’t know his children very well. Having had little interaction with his own father, he didn’t know where to start. Through a United Way United Way African American Initiative that requires parents to become more involved in their sons’ lives, his sons have been able to get to know him. He’s become a positive role model.
Charley is just one of the many people who, thanks to United Way donor support, were helped through United Way diversity initiatives.
United Way spearheads solutions to complex problems in innovative ways. United Way plays a leadership role in convening key players to work together on these problems, putting together research, resources and volunteers to strengthen communities.
Last Year, United Way diversity projects included:
The Diversity Alliance. The Diversity Alliance is comprised of representatives from the affinity groups within United Way corporate partners. This group uses the skills and dedication of its participants to help bridge the gap and build resources within our communities.
African American Initiative. This exciting program supports community-wide efforts to nurture young, at-risk African American boys as they develop into successful young men.
Latino Initiative. The new United Way Latino Initiative strengthens Latino families by helping young people take charge of their future and become successful adults
Immunization Initiative. This nationally-recognized program helps kids in underserved communities the immunizations they need to stay healthy.
Suburban Venture Investment. With the dramatic increase in population of limited-English-speaking residents in the suburbs, United Way is responding with more program resources to aid people in adapting to their new home.
