Updated from Diversity and Outreach Volunteer Thank You Reception.

On January 29, United Way hosted a reception honoring its diversity and outreach volunteers from its African American, Asian Pacific American and Latino Community Outreach Committees, as well as members of its Austin Immunization, Diversity Alliance, Success by Six and Young Leaders Society steering committees. Volunteers were recognized for their support in launching United Way initiatives that keep youth and families healthy, safe and on track for success, as well as for helping to build stronger corporate partnerships and cultivating relationships with tomorrow’s leaders.

Brian Bragg, chair of the United Way Austin Immunization Steering Committee and project director for Chicago Area Immunization—both of which strive to increase immunization rates throughout Chicagoland, received a special award at this event. Brian was honored for his service and commitment to making a difference in the lives of children and families through immunizations.

The United Way Austin Immunization Initiative has been working to increase immunization rates in Austin among children 0-6 by bringing different community leaders and organizations together to address this issue. In 1999, when the initiative began, the Chicago Department of Public Health identified Austin as one of the communities where the number of kids immunized on time is dangerously low. Under Brian’s leadership, this initiative has seen a 60% increase in the number of children receiving their required shots in the Austin community. In addition, Brian is working to develop a Community Immunization Guide available in English and Spanish for day care providers and parents.

United Way congratulates all of its diversity and outreach volunteers.
